Nubra valley is situated in the Karakoram mountain range. The valley comprises three arms that are drained by the Nubra and Shyok rivers. These rivers are fed by a massive congregation of glaciers. In fact, Nubra’s Siachen glacier is said to be the largest glacier outside the polar region.
The landscape, biodiversity, and culture of Nubra are distinct from other parts of Ladakh. Nubra is located on the historical route that connected Central Asia with Ladakh and Baltistan with Tibet. The constant movement of mercantile goods and ideas through the valley over several centuries has made Nubra a unique place. In Nubra, you can still observe and ride the Bactarian camel (double-humped camel), which originates in Central Asia and was used extensively in the Silk Route trade. Different parts of the valley are also famous for the presence of ibex, snow leopards, wild seabuckthorn (Hippophae sp), and an interesting mix of species from the Tibetan plateau, Alpine mountain regions, and Central Asia.
Nubra also has a diverse society with various communities ranging from Buddhists, Noorbakshis, and followers of Shia and Sunni sects of Islam. The presence of these communities has enriched the culture and society of the valley. In Nubra, you can see prehistoric rock art, ancient Buddhist monasteries and pilgrimage sites, and centuries-old Balti palaces and mosques.
The administrative headquarters of Nubra is located in Disket, where the different arms of Nubra valley meet. Disket is strategically located and provides an ideal base to explore the wonders of Nubra valley.
The De Nubra Camp is located near Habib Guest House in Hunder valley, just outside Disket. It provides stunning views of the famous silver sand dunes and Disket Chamba with spectacular sunrises each morning. Cultural shows are held every evening close to the campsite.
The tents used at the campsite are well-equipped with modern facilities and a private porch (verandah) to help you relax as you drink in the dramatic landscape. Each tent has a spacious en suite bathroom with running hot and cold water. The camp is run by professionally trained staff who are warm and hospitable to provide you with a sense of home in Nubra.
